February 4, 2019. San Mateo Ixtatan, Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
In the town of San Mateo Ixtatan, a busy public square bustles in the early morning, as buses stop to let off passengers, children walk to school, kiosks sell their wares. Written in spray paint prominently over the square someone has written "San Mateo Ixtatan, No to the hydro (electric projects aimed at the region) and to mining!" A few hours later, many reported that about a 100 soldiers came in to occupy the town, violating post war peace accords.
